ELLSWORTH — Hancock County athletes are well represented on several regional all-star teams that were announced this week.
Heading the list is Hannah Shaw of the Mount Desert Island Trojans, who was named Co-Player of the Year on the Big East all-conference girls’ basketball team.
Brent Barker, coach of the MDI girls, and Justin Norwood, coach of the MDI boys, also were named Big East Coaches of the Year.
Thomas Sawyer of the Ellsworth Eagles and Ben Walls and Jayson Burke, both of the Mount Desert Island Trojans, were named Big East boys’ first team all-stars, and Nick Holt of Ellsworth and Caleb MacDonald and Nick Shaw, both of MDI, were named to the second team.
Big East scholar-athletes include Morgaen Jones and David Barnard of Ellsworth and Calli Mitchell and Shaw of MDI.
Ashlee Leighton and Holt of Ellsworth and Emily Lewis and Garrett Lee of MDI earned Big East Paul Soucy Spirit Awards.
Big East defensive awards went to Taylor White and Kyle Haslam of Ellsworth and Bailey Burr and Shaw of MDI.
Fourteen county wrestlers earned PVC all-star honors.
Named to the first team were Matthew Stewart of Bucksport at 106 pounds, Jacob Stewart of Bucksport at 152 pounds, Jordan Fogg of Bucksport at 160 pounds, Michael Philippon of Ellsworth at 170 pounds and Damon Klinedinst of Bucksport at 285 pounds.
Named to the second team were Jordan Lord of George Stevens Academy at 132 pounds, Thomas Bulley of MDI at 160 pounds, Chris Powell of Bucksport at 195 pounds and Michael Garland of Ellsworth at 220 pounds.
Honorable mentions went to Jack Weeks of Ellsworth at 132 pounds, Josh Fowler of Ellsworth at 182 pounds, Jake Poors of Ellsworth at 195 pounds, K.P. Hilaire of Bucksport at 220 pounds and Jared Bragg of Ellsworth at 285 pounds.
County athletes chosen to play in the Maine McDonald’s Senior All-star Basketball Games on Saturday, March 10, at Husson University include Jayson Burke of MDI on the Boys’ A/B East team, Gabe O’Brien of the Sumner Tigers on the Boys’ C/D East team and Janelle Ciomei of the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners on the Girls’ C/D East team.
The girls’ C/D game will begin at 9:15 a.m., the boys’ A/B game is at 1:15 p.m. and the boys’ C/D game is at 4:15 p.m.
