BAR HARBOR — A plan to map out the look and locations of business advertising signs downtown is now under development.
The Bar Harbor Business Roundtable, a working group of the chamber of commerce, will create the plan, following unanimous town council approval on Feb. 14.
The move to create a signage plan stems from a recent request by Main Street Market owner Douglas Smith to place a sign on the village green advertising his business and others on lower Main Street. Town councilors told Mr. Smith that they would consider allowing the sign on the village green, which is public land, only if both the chamber and the downtown merchant’s association approved of it first.
Chamber director Chris Fogg responded to the request on Feb. 14, telling councilors that his group would support the request only after an overall signage plan was developed.
“We’re a little concerned that approving one sign could lead to someone else coming forward,” he said. “Soon, you have a bunch of signs that don’t fit together.”
Councilors agreed to the proposal with little discussion. The area to be considered under the plan will encompass West Street, Eden Street, Main Street and Mount Desert Street, and all areas in between. All signage requests will be incorporated into the new plan.
Mr. Fogg estimated that work on the plan could produce a draft document by early summer.
