BANGOR — The top-seeded Mount Desert Island High School boys’ varsity basketball team held on to its undefeated status Wednesday night, defeating the Presque Isle Wildcats 55-49 in the Class B Eastern semifinals at Bangor Auditorium.

The Trojans will take a 20-0 record into Saturday’s Eastern Maine championship game against Gardiner. Gardiner, the number-three seed, upset number-two seed Medomak Valley of Waldoboro on Wednesday.

MDI came out fast against Presque Isle, scoring in the first 5 seconds of the game. The Trojans ran the score up to 11-3 before a surge by the Wildcats tied it at 13-13.

MDI ended the first quarter on top, 17-13; but at the beginning of the second quarter, the Wildcats took the lead for the first time, 18-17. The teams tied again, at 23, with 4 minutes left in the first half, but the Trojans ended the half in the lead, 29-26.

The teams traded fouls and points in the second half until MDI pulled away for good with about 5 minutes left in the game, beating back an offensive run by Presque Isle that brought the Wildcats within 1. With 30 seconds to go in the game, the Trojans were up by 8 points, 55-47. A last basket by Wildcats left the score at 55-49.

The Trojans are set to play the Gardiner Tigers at Bangor Auditorium Saturday beginning at 3:35 p.m.
