Three County Athletes Place Second At State Indoor Track Championships

LEWISTON — Second place finishes by Ellsworth Eagle sophomores Dan Curts and Aleta Looker and Trevor Alley of the Mount Desert Island Trojans topped a handful of scoring performances by Hancock County athletes at the State Class B Indoor Track Championships on Monday at Bates College.

The York boys and the Waterville girls were team champions.

In boys’ competition, the Ellsworth Eagles were 12th with 14 points, the Mount Desert Island Trojans were 18th with 8 and the Sumner Tigers were 26th with 2.

In the girls’ meet, Ellsworth was 12th with 11 points, MDI was 17th with 7 and Bucksport was 21st with 4.

Curts finished second in the boys’ two-mile run with a time of 9:37.38, six seconds behind winner Matthew McClintock of Madison.

Alley was runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 7.5 inches, well off the winning throw of 53 feet, 1 inch by Nick Margitza of Waterville.

Looker was second in the girls’ 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.39, more than two seconds behind winner Bethanie Brown of Waterville.

Looker also placed fifth in the two-mile run with a time of 11:46.12.

BOYS

Four-by-880-yard relay: Ellsworth (Curts, Derek Hawes, Evan Boudreau and Robert Looker), third in 8:53.64; Sumner (Taylor Lee, John San Diego, Brandon Wade and Zac Wells), sixth in 9:05.81.

GIRLS

Four-by-880-yard relay: MDI (Kayla Ray, Nora Hubbell, Cecilia Thomas and Caroline Driscoll), third in 10:24.27.

Mile run: Nelly Winship of Bucksport, fourth in 5:42.05.

Two-mile run: Caroline Driscoll of MDI, seventh in 12:16.43.
