Five County Wrestlers Win State Titles

WINDHAM — Michael Philippon of the Ellsworth Eagles and Jordan Fogg, Jacob Stewart, Chris Powell and Nic Bishop, all of the Bucksport Golden Bucks, were crowned state wrestling champions on Saturday.

In Class B competition, Philippon scored a 5-0 decision over Ryan Graffam of Camden Hills, whom he also defeated for the Western Maine title a week earlier, at 160 pounds.

Three other wrestlers also turned in top four performances for the Eagles, who placed sixth in the team competition with 65 points.

In the consolation finals, Michael Garland scored a major decision over Noah French of Wells for third place at 220 pounds.

Placing fourth were Josh Fowler, who was pinned by Marc Suprenant of Wells at 182 pounds, and Jared Bragg, who was defeated by Ryan Glover of Mountain Valley at 285 pounds.

For the Mount Desert Island Trojans, who placed 13th with 24.5 points, two wrestlers reached the consolation finals, both placing fourth.

Thomas Bulley lost a 6-2 decision to Zach Abram of Gardiner at 160 pounds, and Jon Sargent was pinned by Dakota Jacques of Mountain Valley at 112 pounds.

The Camden Hills Windjammers were the runaway Class B champions, winning four individual titles.

In the Class C championships, the Golden Bucks scored 128 points to finish third behind champion Foxcroft Academy (157.5) and Dexter (148.5).

Winning championships for the Golden Bucks:

Jacob Stewart pinned Julian Baldinelli of Dirigo in 3:20 at 152 pounds.

Fogg pinned Thomas Barnett of Dirigo in 4:20 at 160 pounds and won the John Smith Outstanding Wrestler Award at the tournament.

Bishop pinned Vitaliano Tantoco of Winslow in 5:34 at 170 pounds.

Chris Powell pinned Corbyn Bruce in just 32 seconds at 195 pounds.

Placing second for Bucksport was Damon Klinedinst, who lost a 10-4 decision to Aaron Lint of Winslow in the 285-pound championship final.

Bucksport’s Matt Stewart also reached the consolation finals, where he lost a close 3-2 decision to Dylan Hanscom of Dexter to place fourth at 106 pounds.

For the George Stevens Academy Eagles, who finished 14th with 12.5 points, Jordan Lord placed fourth, losing a close 5-4 decision to Seth Blais of Dexter at 132 pounds in the consolation finals.
