BANGOR — In the opening moments of the second half, the Mount Desert Island Trojan girls trailed the Gardiner Tigers by just four points in Saturday’s Eastern Maine Class B quarterfinal at the Bangor Auditorium.
But the Tigers outscored the Trojans 16-6 over the remainder of the period, then went on a 17-3 run to open the fourth quarter.
That put the fourth-seeded Tigers firmly in charge as they went on to crush fifth-ranked MDI 63-38 to advance to the tournament’s semifinal round.
With sophomore Hannah Shaw scoring 10 of MDI’s first 11 points, the Trojans managed to stay well within striking distance of the Tigers through the first half.
Gardiner led 17-9 after one period, but a basket by Shaw, a foul shot by freshman Delenn Colson and a rebound putback by freshman Molly Carroll cut the lead to three points.
Moments later, junior forward Abby Jewett hit a pair of foul shots, senior forward Caroline Mitchell scored from outside and Jewett hit another free throw to slice the Gardiner lead to 22-21.
But that was as close as the Trojans would get.
The Tigers reeled off seven unanswered points to close the quarter and take a 29-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
And the last half was all Gardiner as the Tigers outscored MDI 34-17 the rest of the way.
Shaw provided most of the offense for the 15-5 Trojans with 18 points. The only other player with more than two points was Jewett, who finished with five.
For 17-3 Gardiner, Jenna Moore led the way with 17 points and Paige Pilsbury had 10.
