BANGOR — Swimmers from the Ellsworth Eagles and the Mount Desert Island Trojans captured first places in eight events last weekend at the Penobscot Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at Husson University.

The always strong Bangor Rams took top honors in both meets.

In the boys’ competition, the Trojans placed second and the Eagles, with a team of just nine swimmers, finished third.

The Trojans also were runners-up and Ellsworth placed fourth in the girls’ meet.

In the boys’ competition, Ellsworth’s Keith Chandler won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.31 and set a school record in the process.

For the Trojans, Joseph Kief was first in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.34 seconds, and freshman Will Greene won the one-meter diving with a score of 321.55.

Ellsworth’s Cece McEachern won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:35.06.

Erin Connery was a double winner for the Trojans in the girls’ events, placing first in the 100-yard freestyle in 57.57 seconds and first in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.39.

Leila Johnston of MDI won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:15.00, and the Trojan foursome of Emma Soucek, Samantha Luck, Sydney Wright and Olivia Jacobs won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:58.89.

A host of other Hancock County swimmers turned in top 12 times in the various events.
