Lady Chargers Edge Mariners

Written by  Fenceviewer Staff Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 9:51 am

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Freshman Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.) scored all of her 10 points in the second half, including the final six for Colby-Sawyer in Saturday's 65-62 win over Maine Maritime.

The Chargers improved to 17-6 overall and 13-3 in the North Atlantic Conference. Maine Maritime dropped to 10-12 overall and 7-8 in conference play.

Junior Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) moved into fifth on Colby-Sawyer's all-time scoring list after pouring in a game-high 23 points. She has 1,160 for her career. DeSanty also made one three pointer, which moved her into fourth all-time and set a single season record with 62.

Junior Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) added 13 points, six assists and five rebounds. Bullett moved into fourth on the all-time list for career assists with 370. Freshman Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.) went 4-5 from the floor and scored 10 points, all in the second half. Junior Sammi Lehr (Cohasset, Mass.) pulled down a team best nine rebounds.

Freshman Bekah Campbell (Corinth) led the Mariners with 18 points and a game-high 17 rebounds in 23 minutes of play off the bench. Freshman Jillian Perron (Skowhegan) and senior Maggie Smith (Bath) added nine points, while junior Leah Jackson (Dedham) grabbed 11 rebounds.

Maine Maritime led for the first 12 minutes of the game and by as much as eight. A pair of treys by Colby-Sawyer's Fruzzetti sparked a 13-4 run to give the Chargers a 25-24 advantage. The game see-sawed for the next five minutes before the home team took a five-point lead. A Maggie Smith jumper and a pair of free throws gave the Mariners momentum heading into the locker-room, trailing by just one (33-32) at the break.

DeSanty scored 13 first half points to lead all scorers. Maine Maritime was able to keep the game close by controlling play in the paint. The Mariners had an 18-10 edge in points in the paint and a 24-15 advantage on the glass.

The second half was a mirror image of the first as both teams held small leads throughout. With the game tied, for the tenth time, at 61-61 Cahill hit a pair of free throws to put the Chargers on top 63-31. Maine Maritime's Campbell hit one of two free throw attempts to cut the deficit in half, but the Mariners were held scoreless for the final three minutes. A Cahill layup with 1:06 on the clock secured the 65-62 victory for Colby-Sawyer.

Maine Maritime out-rebounded Colby-Sawyer 48-33 and benefited from 36 points off the bench. Colby-Sawyer connected on 19 of 25 free throw attempts.

Maine Maritime next plays at Thomas on Tuesday at 5:30 pm.
