BAR HARBOR — After falling by just two points to the Mount Desert Island Trojans earlier this season, the Ellsworth Eagles would like nothing better than to spoil the Trojans’ bid for their first-ever perfect regular season.

BAR HARBOR — After falling by just two points to the Mount Desert Island Trojans earlier this season, the Ellsworth Eagles would like nothing better than to spoil the Trojans’ bid for their first-ever perfect regular season.
The Eagles may get that chance Friday when the two teams meet in Bar Harbor in their final contest before moving on to the Eastern Maine Class B basketball tournament.
The Trojans already have made team history “with 16 wins and counting,” according to MDI Athletic Director Bunky Dow. Trojan boys’ teams compiled previous records of 15-3 in 1976, 1995, 1996 and 1999.
But in their bid to go undefeated, the top-ranked Trojans must first get past the 10-6 Washington Academy Raiders, another tournament-bound team. They’ll host the Raiders Thursday in a game that was postponed from Tuesday.
Ellsworth, currently 12-4 and ranked fourth in Class B, is scheduled to host the 6-10 Hermon Hawks tonight.
The Trojans and the Eagles are two of five Hancock County teams that are assured of post-season play.
With their season already wrapped up, the 16-2 Sumner Tigers are ranked second in Class C, trailing only the top-ranked 17-1 Lee Academy Pandas.
The 9-9 Bucksport Golden Bucks are ranked ninth among the 11 tournament-qualifying teams in Class C.
The 10-7 Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners are slated to close out against the Searsport Vikings tonight and currently are ranked fifth among the 15 qualifying teams in Class D.
For the 7-10 George Stevens Academy Eagles, a win in tonight’s game against the Orono Red Riots could decide whether the 13th-ranked Eagles slip past Madawaska and Stearns and into the 11th and last qualifying spot in Class C.
The Acadia Christian Seahawks, despite their best record in years at 9-8, will not finish among the Class D tournament qualifiers.
