Five County Wrestlers Are PVC Champions

Written by  Hugh Bowden Sunday, February 05, 2012 at 3:06 pm

LINCOLN — Saturday was a big day for seven Hancock County wrestlers.

Brothers Matthew and Jacob Stewart, Jordan Fogg and Damon Klinedinst of the Bucksport Golden Bucks and Michael Philippon of the Ellsworth Eagles all captured individual titles at the annual Penobscot Valley Conference Wrestling Championships.

And Klinedinst, along with Josh Fowler of the Ellsworth Eagles and Jordan Lord of the George Stevens Academy Eagles, all recorded their 100th career wins in a day of wrestling at Mattanawcook Academy.

In the team competition, neither defending champion Ellsworth nor the Golden Bucks had enough firepower to catch the Foxcroft Academy Ponies and the Dexter Tigers, who finished one-two in this year’s event.

The Ponies scored 177 points, squeaking past the Tigers by a single point, with Bucksport third at 150 and Ellsworth fourth at 121.

Following the top four were Fort Kent 93, Washington Academy 63.5, Caribou 56, Mattanawcook 41, Piscataquis 41, Hermon 34, the Mount Desert Island Trojans 32, Penobscot Valley 29, GSA 28, Old Town 11, Central 10, Lee Academy 10, Katahdin 3 and Orono with no score.

In individual competition, the Golden Bucks were the big winners of the day.

At 106 pounds, Matthew Stewart, picked up three wins, pinning Harry Larrabee of Ellsworth in 1:05 and Megan Pelletier of Fort Kent in 4:31 before scoring a 9-6 decision over Dylan Hanscom of Dexter, who had beaten Stewart twice this season, in the championship final.

Senior Jacob Stewart, at 152 pounds, took less than two minutes with each of his three opponents, pinning Sam Lounder of Ellsworth in 1:06, Vincent Malinauskas of Dexter in 1:31 and Josh Pelletier of Fort Kent in 1:49 to win the title.

At 160 pounds, Bucksport’s Fogg, also a senior, pinned Jacob Tardiff of Fort Kent in just 36 seconds, then won a 9-0 decision over Jon Gudroe of Dexter before pinning Thomas Bulley of the MDI Trojans in 3:13 in the championship final.

In the 285-pound heavyweight class, Klinedinst claimed his 100th win when he pinned Colton Strout of the MDI Trojans in 1:41 in the first of his three bouts.

Klinedinst then scored a 14-5 major decision over Kyle Lockhart of Dexter in his semifinal and pinned Alex Sedore of Foxcroft Academy in 1:48 for Bucksport’s fourth title win.

Ellsworth’s Michael Philippon took home his second straight PVC championship after winning what may have been the most exciting bout of the day.

In the 170-pound weight class, Philippon drew a first-round bye and pinned Carl Snow of Dexter in just 1:12 in the semifinal.

But he battled Zack Smith of Foxcroft to a 1-1 tie over the regulation five minutes, sending the bout into overtime.

Philippon picked up what proved to be the winning point with an escape in the first overtime, then managed to retain control of Smith through the second 30-second overtime to eke out the victory.

GSA’s Jordan Lord had to settle for the runner-up spot at 132 pounds when Trevor Weymouth of Foxcroft pinned him at 2:30 in the championship final for his 150th career win.

But Lord reached his own 100-win milestone earlier in the day, taking a 6-4 decision over Wyatt Tash of Mattanawcook after having pinned Corey Worster of Lee Academy and Alvin Wheeler of Bucksport in his first two bouts.

Also wrestling his way to runner-up for Ellsworth was Michael Garland, who pinned Garrett Neal of Mattanawcook and Adam Ranco of MDI before being pinned by Zachary Ragot of Washington Academy in 3:55 in the 220-pound championship final.

Ellsworth’s Fowler came up short in his first bid for his 100th win, dropping a 7-3 decision to Deion Caudill of Caribou in the 182-pound weight class.

But Fowler reached the century mark in the consolation semifinals with a pin of Anthony Callela of Old Town in 2:26, then went on to place third in the class, pinning Anthony McLaughlin of Dexter in just 36 seconds in the consolation final.

Also placing third for Ellsworth were Jack Weeks at 132 pounds, Jake Poors at 195 pounds and Jared Bragg at 285 pounds.

For Bucksport at 195 pounds, Chris Powell wrestled his way to the runner-up spot, pinning Andrea Hamilton of Old Town in just 15 seconds and Josh Haskell of Dexter in just 35 seconds before dropping a 6-3 decision to Alex Urquart of Hermon in the final.

K.P. Hilaire placed third for the Golden Bucks at 220 pounds and Alex Brown was fourth at 120 pounds.

Bulley, the lone scorer for MDI, pinned Garrett Henderson of Ellsworth in 2:48 and Jay Folsom of Piscataquis in 2:40 before falling to Fogg in the title bout at 160.

On Saturday, Bucksport will host the Western Maine Class C Championships and Ellsworth and MDI will travel to Medomak Valley High School in Waldoboro for the Class B championship meet.
