Written by  Hugh Bowden Wednesday, February 01, 2012 at 11:53 am

ELLSWORTH — The tournament-bound Mount Desert Island Trojans, Ellsworth Eagles and Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners kept on winning this week.

Undefeated MDI, now 15-0 and more than seven Heal points ahead of second-place Gardiner at the top of the Eastern Maine Class B standings, rolled over the Old Town Coyotes 73-59 and knocked off the Hermon Hawks 56-40.

Fifth-ranked Ellsworth, with a record of 12-4, had wins of 67-35 over Foxcroft Academy, 43-36 over the John Bapst Crusaders and 66-59 over the Old Town Coyotes.

In Class D, the sixth-ranked Mariners improved to 9-6 with a 58-45 win over the Bangor Christian Patriots and a 49-32 win over the Penobscot Valley Howlers.

The Sumner Tigers remained atop the Class C standings with a scant one-point lead over second-place Lee Academy. The Tigers downed the Bucksport Golden Bucks 56-40 and the George Stevens Academy Eagles 65-48, but their record slipped to 14-2 on Tuesday with a 63-47 loss to the Jonesport-Beals Royals.

Also in Class C, the 6-9 Golden Bucks and the 7-8 GSA Eagles remain in the mix for post-season play.

Bucksport currently is ranked ninth and GSA is a tenth of a point out of the 11th and last qualifying spot, trailing Madawaska after losing 48-45 to the Narraguagus Knights on Tuesday.

In Class D, the 8-7 Acadia Christian Seahawks — despite having their best season in many a year — are three spots out of playoff contention with just three games remaining.
