MDI Blasts Bangor, Sets Pool Records

Written by  Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 10:29 am

BANGOR — The Mount Desert Island High School swim team set two pool records at Husson College on Monday during a meet against rival powerhouse Bangor.

“That’s a college facility and that’s where Bangor has swum forever,” said head coach Tony DeMuro. “To set records at their house is really pretty impressive. That’s the fastest anybody ever clocked in that pool has swum that particular event.”

MDI freshman Leila Johnston set a record for her performance in the 100-yard butterfly, she swam it in an unbelievable 58.22.

“She’s been at 58.5 and right around there for a while now,” said DeMuro. “To put it in perspective, she’s swimming faster than the average national time for a boys’ swimmer. She’s really up there.”

Besides also placing first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.78, Leila also helped set MDI’s other Husson pool record, in the girls’ 200-yard medley relay. Johnston, Emma Soucek, Erin Connery and Amelia Kief swam it in an impressive 1:54.67.

Also for the girls, Amelia Kief finished first in the 100-yard free in a time of 58.01.

“We really swam well, even if the overall scores don’t reflect it,” said DeMuro. “And we had a lot of really good races. They’re deep. They’re really good. On the boys’ side especially, this meet for us was more about the racing and how we're doing than the scores.”

For the boys, Ross Johnston placed first in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.39.

He also finished first in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:12.27. And Will Greene finished first in the 1-meter diving with a score of 186.40.

“We rarely go up there and lay it out,” said DeMuro. “We expect to work hard and race well.”

Right now, MDI will focus on the final regular-season meet against John Bapst in Bar Harbor on Friday at 6 p.m.
