ELLSWORTH — A 24-year-old Ellsworth man is facing numerous charges after he was found in possession of bath salts and other drugs.
Officer Chad Wilmot stopped Craig Strout-Desmond on Hancock Street Jan. 19 to check whether the Ellsworth man was complying with bail conditions stemming from a previous drug charge.
Police searched Strout-Desmond and his vehicle and found numerous pills and five grams of the synthetic drug bath salts.
Strout-Desmond was charged with unlawful possession of a schedule W drug (oxycodone), unlawful possession of a schedule W drug (Ritalin), unlawful possession of a synthetic hallucinogenic drug (bath salts) and violating conditions of release.
This is the first time Ellsworth police have charged someone with possession of bath salts since the state Legislature passed a law elevating the charge from a civil violation to a Class D misdemeanor crime.
Lt. Harold Page said the department did issue a civil violation over the summer.
