Eagles Hold Off Bucks

Written by  Hugh Bowden Saturday, January 07, 2012 at 12:28 pm

BUCKSPORT — The Bucksport Golden Bucks battled the Ellsworth Eagles on almost even terms for much of the way in a 57-52 Ellsworth win on Friday.

The Eagles jumped in front quickly, opening a 15-5 lead in the first period, thanks to six points by Thomas Sawyer and a pair of three-pointers by Nick Holt.

But with Mike Cummings scoring nine second-period points to lead the way, Golden Bucks sliced the Eagle lead to just four points, 28-24, by halftime.

Bucksport came out strong to open the third period, with Mat Swazey scoring from down low and Josh Gray knocking down a pair of foul shots to knot the score at 28-all.

The Eagles pushed the lead back to as many as nine points late in the period with Sawyer netting a pair of threes.

But the Golden Bucks didn’t go quietly and with less than two minutes to go, Bucksport’s Mitchell Burgess hit a three-pointer to cut the Ellsworth lead to 51-47.

But that was a close as the Golden Bucks would get as Josh Bean drove the length of the floor for two points, then connected on both ends of a one-and-one to put Ellsworth back up 55-47 with 55 seconds to go.

Burgess hit one more three-pointer for the Golden Bucks in the final seconds, but it was too little, too late.

Sawyer led all scorers with 20 points for the Eagles, Holt added 15 and Kyle Haslam had 10.

For Bucksport, Cummings finished with 15 points, Gray had 12 and Sam Stearns added 10.
