Farmington Topples Maine Maritime

Written by  Fenceviewer Staff Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 9:54 am

CASTINE — Ben Johnson (Manchester) posted a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double and a pair of blocks to lead Maine-Farmington to a 62-49 win over Maine Maritime Academy Tuesday evening. Johnson was one of three Beavers (6-5, 7-0) to finish the game with double digits in the points column, keeping the Beavers unblemished in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play.

Johnson dumped in five points and pulled down three of his rebounds during a Farmington 12-0 run to open the second half. The spurt erased the Mariners (2-10, 1-5 NAC) 32-31 halftime lead. Andrew Dickey (Cape Elizabeth) scored 15 points off of the bench with a five-of-eight effort from behind the three-point line. Farmington's bench outscored Maine Maritime's 22-0. Kevin Leary (Manchester) hit three-of-three shots from three-point range for a 10-point, eight rebound evening.

Both teams were solid from beyond the arc throughout. Farmington clicked on 11-of-25 (44.0%), while the Mariners made good on nine-of-19 (47.4).

The Mariners also had three players score in double figures, Tyler Pineo (Corinth) dumped in 16 powered by a four-of-eight effort from three-point range. Benjamin Russell (Farmington) and Andy Ball (Hermon) each knocked down a pair of treys to finish with 10 and 12 points, respectively.

Russell's first trey of the night, 5:14 in the second half, stopped the bleeding on the Farmington run, but the damage was already done.

The Mariners leading scorer this season, Shawn Dostie (Bowdoinam) missed the bulk of the second half with an injury. His night ended with eight points, six rebounds, and five blocked shots.

Maine Maritime returns to action Friday evening at Johnson State.
