HOWLAND — Ellsworth Eagle wrestlers took top team honors and the Bucksport Golden Bucks were runners-up at Saturday’s Penobscot Valley Holiday Tournament.

The Eagles and Golden Bucks each went away with three individual champions, but the Eagles’ three wins in the consolation finals were enough to give them the edge over Bucksport.

“The day went really well,” said Ellsworth assistant coach Dan Ormsby. “We led the entire tournament, but there were times that other teams were as close as one point to our score.

“The win at the holiday tournament will bring more positive energy into the wrestling room,” added Ormsby. “Ellsworth wrestling is improving leaps and bounds from year to year and we are looking forward to continued success throughout the season.”

Team scores were Ellsworth 155, Bucksport 124, Erskine Academy 108, Brewer 103, Mount View 85, Morse 80.5, Madison 79, Caribou 78, Fort Kent 69, Nokomis 61, Hermon 48, Mattanawcook Academy 45.5, the Mount Desert Island Trojans 42, Winslow 38, Medomak Valley 36, Maine Central Institute 33, the George Stevens Academy Eagles 32, Penobscot Valley 27, Calais 24, Old Town 19, Woodland 15, Central 15, Calvary Chapel 14, Sumner 4 and Oceanside no score.

The Eagles’ wins all came in the heavier end of the weight classes.

At 170 pounds, Mike Philippon pinned Ryan Wood of Erskine Academy; at 182 pounds, Josh Fowler scored a 13-3 major decision over Cade Ayotte of Erskine Academy; and at 220 pounds, Mike Garland pinned Yanick Price-Prevot of Medomak Valley.

In the consolation finals for third place, Dustin Smelley scored a 9-1 major decision over Michael Selander of Caribou at 138 pounds and Joe Wright at 152 pounds and Jake Poors at 195 pounds both collected forfeit wins.

Champions for the Golden Bucks were Matt Stewart, who pinned James Blanchette of Mount View at 106 pounds; Jake Stewart, who won a 5-4 decision over Michael Alvarez of Morse at 152 pounds; and Chris Powell, who scored an 8-1 decision over Victor Irwin of Brewer.

Also for Bucksport, Damon Klinedinst placed second after losing a 9-3 decision to Marcus Eaton of Brewer at 285 pounds.

In the consolation finals for the Golden Bucks, Alex Brown lost a close 6-5 decision to Dylan Harrington of Morse at 120 pounds.

For MDI’s Trojans, Thomas Bulley won a championship at 160 pounds, pinning Kris Ferguson of Mattanawcook Academy.

GSA’s Alex Turanski and Jordan Lord both finished as runners-up.

Turanski dropped a close 8-7 decision to Jon Crocker of Nokomis at 126 pounds, and Lord lost a 7-3 decision to Gary Stevens of Morse at 132 pounds.

Ellsworth, with a 12-2 record, currently trails only the undefeated Camden Hills Windjammers and the 3-8 MDI Trojans are sixth in the Eastern Maine Class B standings.

In the Western Maine Class C ranks, Bucksport is second, behind Dirigo, and the GSA Eagles are sixth.
