ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Eagles came up just short in a bid for their first win of the season, cutting several leads to a single point before the Caribou Vikings pulled away to a 55-49 win on Friday in Ellsworth.
Caribou jumped out to an 18-11 lead in the first period, but a rebound putback by Annika Firestone and a three-pointer by Emily Berry cut the lead to 23-22 in the second period before the Vikings closed the quarter with a 6-0 run.
Trailing by seven points midway through the third period, the Eagles rallied again as freshman Hailee Langley scored eight points and Emily Berry had seven, including a rebound putback that cut the Caribou lead to 40-39.
Ellsworth kept things close through the first five minutes of the final quarter, trailing just 49-47 with 3:16 to go.
But the Vikings got a basket from Alexa Massey and hit four of five foul shots down the stretch to hold on for the win.
Hailee Langley led all scorers with 21 points and eight rebounds and Berry finished with 12 for the Eagles.
Becca McDougall had 16 points and Massey contributed 13 for the Vikings, who won for the first time this season.
