Mariners Down Bucks

Written by  Hugh Bowden Saturday, December 31, 2011 at 3:43 pm

BUCKSPORT — Hayden Ciomei scored six of his 13 points in the first period to help stake the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners to a 13-7 lead.

That proved to be a lead they would never relinquish in a 59-46 upset win over the Bucksport Golden Bucks Friday night.

Connor Morey hit a trio of three-pointers and scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the first half as the Mariners built a 28-13 lead by halftime.

But the Golden Bucks didn’t go quietly.

With his Golden Bucks trailing by 10, Mitchell Burgess cut the Mariner lead to four with back-to-back three-pointers midway through the quarter.

But Sam Grindle answered with a three-pointer for the Mariners, and moments later the lead was back to 10 points and Bucksport never got closer again.

Grindle finished with 12 points for the Mariners, and for the Golden Bucks, Mike Cummings led with 17 points and Burgess had nine.
