Eagles Knock Off Unbeaten Wildcats

Written by  Hugh Bowden Friday, December 30, 2011 at 3:08 pm

ELLSWORTH — With senior Nick Holt all but shooting the lights out in the first half, the Ellsworth Eagles took a big lead and never let it get away in downing the Presque Isle Wildcats 69-50 on Thursday.

In a battle of two previously unbeaten teams that most fans thought would be anybody’s game, the Eagles netted eight three-pointers and held the Wildcats to just nine second-period points in jumping out to a 44-26 halftime lead.

Holt had five of those three-pointers, connecting on eight of 10 shots overall and scoring 19 points in the first half.

Senior Thomas Sawyer also had 10 first-half points, including two-three pointers.

Ellsworth coach Peter Austin said the “unbelievable” shooting and the Eagles’ collective quickness made the difference.

“If we miss three of those [three-pointers], it’s a game because I know Presque Isle is a good team,” said Austin.

“We wanted to run … and get their bigs tired,” added the coach, and while Ellsworth’s shooting cooled off some in the second half — the Eagles still finished at 52 percent — the Wildcats could get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

The Wildcats went on a 10-3 run early in the third quarter, and a period-ending three-pointer by Cole Richards cut the Eagle lead to 53-39.

But Ellsworth opened the fourth period with an 8-0 run that pushed the lead back out to 60-39, and the Wildcats managed just seven points the rest of the way.

Holt finished with a game-high 24 points, Sawyer had 14 points and eight rebounds and Josh Bean added 12 points and five assists for the Eagles.

Tyler Brooks led Presque Isle with 16 points and Matt Eager added 10.
