Mariners Sink Tigers

EASTPORT — After a close first period, the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners pulled ahead to stay in a 69-60 season-opening win over the Shead Tigers on Saturday.

The Mariners pushed their lead to 10 points by halftime and maintained that edge through the third period, said coach Glenn Billings.

“Then we pushed it up to about 14 and played everybody right at the end,” he said.

Sam Grindle led the Mariners’ balanced attack with 21 points, Tim Cormier had 12, Hayden Ciomei scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Lucas Oliver had 10 points and Connor Morey eight.

“That was really good balance,” said Billings, “just what I was hoping would come around for us.”
