MDI Wrestlers Work Off Rust in Preseason Meet

Written by

BUCKSPORT — The Mount Desert Island High School wrestling team had its first scrimmage against Bucksport High School on Saturday. According to head coach Chip Dugans, the Trojans used the opportunity to scrape away some off season rust.

“We didn’t win,” he said. “But we had eight different kids that weren’t there for one reason or another, including our captain Elias Burne. But overall, I saw some good things. And some things we need to work on. We’ve got to get ourselves cleaned up before our big dual meets down in Belfast next weekend.”

MDI will march off to Belfast for the team’s first regular-season wrestling matches, on Saturday at 9 a.m. to face off against Camden Hills, Medomak Valley, Hermon, and Ellsworth.

“Between now and then, we’re going to work on standing stuff,” he said. “And moving guys around. We’re going to practice better setups for our takedown moves to find openings. We did not do that this weekend. They’ve got to move quicker at the mat. This is just the basic stuff.”
