A traditional Thanksgiving dinner is in the works at the Common Good this year thanks to Ralph and Frances Reed.

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Every year since 1999 – save one – Frances and Ralph Reed have hosted a free Thanksgiving dinner for the Mount Desert Island community at their Quietside Café.
“It’s become a tradition with us,” Mr. Reed said recently. “It’s part of us now.”
The exception was last year, when the couple decided to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary with a Caribbean cruise. But the popular holiday tradition continued in their absence, thanks to Larry Stettner and others at the Common Good Soup Kitchen, who offered to cook and serve the meal at their café in Seawall.
This Thanksgiving the Reeds are back in the kitchen, joining forces with the Common Good to put on a holiday feast that has the potential to top the offerings of previous years.
The dinner will be held again at the Common Good, which is located in the building in Manset that once housed Annabelle’s Seawall Dining Room. All are invited; food will be served between noon and 3 p.m.
Preparing a meal for 150 or so takes some planning, Mr. Reed said. This year the menu includes eight turkeys, two hams, vegetable dishes and 15 pies.
“We’re still doing a traditional Thanksgiving dinner,” Mr. Reed said.
Ms. Reed bakes the pies ahead of time. On Wednesday, the day before the dinner, the couple begins preparing the other dishes. They rise early Thanksgiving morning to start the turkeys and hams.
