AUGUSTA — Two Mount Desert Island soccer players are state title-holders for their play Saturday in Augusta with the Hampden Broncos, a U14 travel team.
Opal Curless of Southwest Harbor and Paige Mason of Mount Desert played on behalf of the Broncos, which won the Maine State Cup 1-0 after Opal scored the winning goal against defending champion Windham, with 3 minutes left in the game.
According to her coach (and father) Michael Curless, Opal received the ball at the midfield line and dribbled around three Windham players before shooting from the top of the penalty box to score past an outstretched goalie.
Mason helped the Broncos to record another shutout, allowing Windham only four shots on goal the entire game.
Overall, the Broncos finished the season 16-0-0, winning all six league games, a five-game tournament in Sanford and five state cup games.
Paige is the daughter of Mike and Stacey Mason, and Opal is the daughter of Michael and Abigail Curless. Paige and Opal have played together with Acadia Fire, MDI’s local travel soccer club for the past three years.
