Cougars Oust Trojans

FARMINGTON — The Mount Desert Island High School football team fell to Mount Blue 43-7 in the quarterfinal round of the Pine Tree Conference Class B playoffs at Kemp Field on Friday.

Mount Blue jumped to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter on a pair of touchdown runs. Two passes in the second quarter by Mount Blue quarterback Jordan Whitney set MDI back 28-0 at halftime.

“Mount Blue had a good game plan for us,” said head coach Mark Shields. “They were keying Elias Burne and (Jayson) Burke most of the game and that definitely hindered us from what we wanted to do.”

Apparently, due to concern about the strength of Trojans running backs Burke and Burne Mount Blue established an eight-man front as a departure from its traditional seven-man line. As a result, the Cougars were able to hold the Trojans to a single touchdown.

That touchdown was scored as a response to another Mount Blue score (which extended the Cougar lead 35-0). MDI finished a 15-play, 73-yard drive to the end zone with a 6-yard touchdown run by Burke. Trevor Alley kicked in the extra point.

In the final moments of the fourth quarter, Mount Blue scored again on a 28-yard run to win 43-7.

“I was just proud of them, like I was proud of them all season long,” said Shields.
