Terriers Topple Mariners

Written by  Fenceviewer Staff Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 9:46 am

CASTINE — Blake Boswell (Scunthrope, England) assisted on three goals to lead Thomas College to a 4-1 win at Maine Maritime Academy in North Atlantic Conference men's soccer action Wednesday evening.

Boswell played a ball into the box for Dakota Duplisse (Manchester) to blast into the lower left corner late in the 16th minute to give the Terriers (9-5, 4-3 NAC) the early jump. He took the initial shot on a pair of insurance markers late in the second half.

Duplisse's tally was all of the scoring in the first half, though the Mariners (7-4-2, 4-3-1 NAC) had their opportunities. None were better than Abdullah Alkhayyat (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) direct kick from just outside of the box. Alkhayyat fired a scorching line drive, but Thomas keeper Mikkail Crockwell (St. David's Bermuda) was up to the challenge, punching the advance away.

Crockwell turned away five shots in collecting the victory. The bulk of his action came in the first half as Maine Maritime owned a 12-9 advantage in shots.

The second half saw Thomas on the offensive. Michael Hand (Essex, England) made it a 2-0 game with a run up the left side at 63:45. It stood up as the game winner.

Benjamin Russell (Farmington), the reigning NAC Player of the Week, tallied for the third time in as many games nearly 12 minutes after hand to make it a 2-1 game. Alkhayyat played a long ball into the box where Russell's blast caromed off of the crossbar and into the net.

It was 3:10 later that Paul Rechichi (Kingsley, Australia) took the lead back to two. After a Boswell shot that was blocked by defender Nick El-Hajj (Winterport), the ball landed at Rechichi's feet for an easy shot into an open goal. Khamisi Lightbourne (Sandy's, Bermuda) tacked on another rebound goal late in the 87th minute.

Despite four goals on the sheet, William Trace Lacour (Charlottesville, Va.) turned in an outstanding evening making nine saves. He saw 20 shots fired in his direction in the second half. The Terriers owned a 29-15 advantage in shots and took eight corner kicks to the Mariners one.

The Mariners return to action on Saturday, closing out the league slate at New England College. The Terriers close out their league and regular season schedule at home on Saturday against Lyndon State.
