Five Hancock County Girls' Teams in the Hunt for Soccer Playoffs

Written by  Hugh Bowden Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 11:19 am

ELLSWORTH — With just days remaining in the regular season, four Hancock County girls’ soccer teams appear to be headed for regional soccer playoffs with another having an outside chance.

In Eastern Maine Class B, the 8-4 Ellsworth Eagles currently are ranked sixth among the 12 teams that will qualify for post-season play.

The Eagles are scheduled to face the number eight John Bapst Crusaders this afternoon and host the 2-9-0 Mount Desert Island Trojans, who are out of the playoff picture, in their regular season finale on Monday at 6 p.m.

In Eastern Maine Class C, the Bucksport Golden Bucks climbed to seventh place among the 11 qualifying teams after edging the Mattanawcook Academy Lynx 1-0 on Tuesday in Lincoln.

The 3-8-1 Sumner Tigers have a tenuous grip on the 11th and last spot in Class C after falling to the Searsport Vikings 2-1 on Tuesday in Searsport.

The Tigers are scheduled to square off against the Golden Bucks Thursday at 4 p.m. in Bucksport and will travel to Blue Hill on Saturday to face the 13th-ranked George Stevens Academy Eagles at 11 a.m. in the regular season finale for both teams.

The Eagles are scheduled to host the Dexter Tigers Thursday at 4 p.m. and wins over Dexter and Sumner might boost them into the top 11 and a Class C playoff spot.

In Class D, the 6-5 Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners are ranked seventh among the 11 qualifying teams with three games still to go.

The Mariners are scheduled to play at Searsport Thursday and at Howland against the second-ranked Penobscot Valley Howlers on Saturday at 11 a.m. before hosting the Bangor Christian Patriots on Monday at 4 p.m. in the regular season finale.
