Eagles Keep on Rolling

Written by  Hugh Bowden Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 11:14 am

ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Eagles cleared what many considered to be their biggest hurdle en route to an undefeated regular season as they downed the Presque Isle Wildcats 4-1 on Wednesday, Oct. 5, in Ellsworth.

That win, coupled with a 5-0 romp over the Washington Academy Raiders on Friday in East Machias, upped Ellsworth’s record to 11-0 with just three games to go.

The Eagles are now ranked second in the Eastern Maine Class B standings, trailing only the 11-0 Camden Hills Windjammers.

Ellsworth is scheduled to face the John Bapst Crusaders Thursday in Bangor and will host the Foxcroft Academy Ponies on Saturday at 2 p.m. and the Mount Desert Island Trojans on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The playoff-bound Trojans, who are ranked a solid seventh in Eastern Maine Class B despite a record of just 5-6-1, are scheduled to host the Washington Academy Raiders today before closing out the regular season at Ellsworth.

In Eastern Maine Class C, the Sumner Tigers have been coming on strong, though they remain ranked only 10th in the battle for 11 post-season playoff spots despite their 9-3-0 record.

The 5-7-0 George Stevens Academy Eagles currently are ranked 12th, but could likely play their way into the playoffs with a win over the fourth-ranked Dexter Tigers on Friday in Blue Hill.

The Eagles will close out the regular season Monday at Searsport against the 1-10-1 Vikings.
