ELLSWORTH — Robert Banner scored a pair of touchdowns as the Ellsworth/Sumner high school football team romped to a 32-6 victory over the Hermon Hawks junior varsity on Monday.

A Homecoming crowd estimated at several hundred looked on from the sidelines as Ellsworth/Sumner won for the fifth time in six outings.

Josh Fowler got things started for the home team when he scooped up a Hermon fumble at the Hawks’ 40-yard line and raced into the end zone for a touchdown.

Moments later, Banner made it 12-0 with a 35-yard scoring run, and quarterback Matt Savageau scored on a quarterback keeper to put Ellsworth/Sumner up 18-0.

Hermon got its only score of the game when quarterback Kelcin Dullas hooked up with Collin Hewes on a 75-yard touchdown pass just before halftime.

In the second half for Ellsworth/Sumner, Banner scored again on a two-yard plunge in to the end zone and Matt Clark had an eight-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion.

“I think the team is close to making the transition from JV to varsity,” said coach Duane Crawford. “We are still someplace in the middle, but the kids are starting to get the game planning and their intensity is good as is their enthusiasm.

“We are privileged to have a number of options in the backfield with three very good tailbacks and two fullbacks.

“At 5-1 with two more games left, I couldn’t be prouder of this group of kids,” said Crawford.

Ellsworth/Sumner will travel to Dexter next Monday before wrapping up the season against the MDI Trojans junior varsity on Monday, October 24, at 5 p.m. in Bar Harbor.
