HERMON — The Ellsworth Football League’s fifth- and sixth-grade team played its way to a 20-0 win in a defense-dominated game at Hermon on Saturday.
Damian Carter’s punting provided good field position for Ellsworth and defensive tackle Christopher Barnes had six tackles for losses and opened the scoring with a 22-yard fumble return for a touchdown.
Two possessions later, a 36-yard interception return by free safety Andrew Brown gave Ellsworth a two-touchdown lead.
Hermon’s only scoring threat was thwarted when a jarring tackle by Ellsworth linebacker Croix Albee forced a fumble that was recovered by defensive lineman Malcolm Svec inside the 20-yard line.
A leaping interception and ensuing return by Bradly Smith nearly provided another defensive score for Ellsworth, but Smith was caught from behind on a shoestring tackle.
Two plays later, Andrew Brown broke a run off left tackle, cut to the middle and scored from 34 yards out for Ellsworth’s third touchdown.
