EHS Boys, MDI Girls Are County Champs

SULLIVAN — Aleta Looker and Dan Curts, Ellsworth’s standout sophomores, both claimed individual wins at Friday’s Hancock County cross-country championships at Sumner Memorial High School.

The Ellsworth Eagle boys and the Mount Desert Island girls won the team championships.

In the girls’ race, Looker led from start to finish, posting a time of 16 minutes and 48 seconds over the 2.55-mile course.

The Trojan girls took the next seven places, posting a team score of 20, with Maggie Painter finishing in 17:44, followed by Olivia Erickson in 18:06, Isabel Erickson in 18:12, Malia Demers in 18:15, Nora Hubbell in 18:26, Caroline Driscoll in 18:44 and Rachel McMinimy in 19:08.

Second came the Ellsworth Eagles with 51 points. Following Looker for Ellsworth were Jamie Ford in 19:45, Mallory Nightingale in 19:48, Hayley Lawrence in 19:53, Mariah Brown in 20:19, Brooke Dunn in 20:52 and Kelsey Leighton in 21:16.

For the third place Bucksport Golden Bucks (90 points), Nellie Winship was ninth overall in 19:14, followed by Olivia Eklund in 20:28, Avalon Langevin in 21:12, Jade Darragh in 23:27 and Bri Newbegin in 23:37.

For the George Stevens Academy Eagles (92 points), Nicole Bakeman was 10th overall in 19:28, followed by Amanda Mori in 21:18, Madison Cole in 21:19, Cedar Slagle in 21:52, Ramsay Williamson in 22:10 and Lilly Cousins in 22:12.

Ellsworth’s Curts took an early lead and gradually pulled away from GSA’s River Vogel and Sumner’s Taylor Lee to win the boys’ race in 14:24, taking six seconds off the previous course record.

Vogel was runner-up in 15:10 and Lee was third in 15:21.

Finishing fifth through 10th for the Eagle boys, who won with 23 points, were Stephen Kirby in 15:54, Robert Looker in 16:01, Brayden Beardsley in 16:04, Frank King in 16:07, Blake Pattengale in 16:19 and Evan Boudreau in 16:25.

For the runner-up MDI Trojans (53 points), William Fletcher led the way, placing fourth in 15:52.

He was followed by Ralph Magnani in 17:01, Ransom Burgess in 17:03, Jon Sproule in 17:04, Ethan Craigo in 17:04, Sam Sproule in 17:08 and Andy Gallup in 17:42.

Behind Lee for third place Sumner (64 points) were Brandon Wade in 16:38, Kyle Jordan in 17:20, Zac Wells in 17:23, John Sandiego in 18:15, Braden Wentworth in 19:10 and Jason Smith in 19:36.

Also running for GSA were Gavin Rodgers in 17:16 and Matthew Ahern in 19:30, and for Bucksport, Alex Bourgon in 20:55 and Zack Clark in 21:59.

Ellsworth’s Mike Philippon won the boys’ junior varsity race in 17:21, and MDI’s Waylon Henggeler won the girls’ JV race in 19:27.

The Penobscot Valley Conference cross-country championships will be held at Caribou High School at noon on Saturday.
