Series History: Today's game marks the 25th meeting between Maine Maritime Academy and Westfield State. The Mariners hold a 14-10 lead, riding a six game winning streak over the Owls.
The Last Meeting: Then-junior running back Nick Bourassa ran for 156 yards and three scores, but fullback Jim Bower stole the show as Maine Maritime ran to a 42-21 victory over Westfield State. Bower became the third MMA running back in the programs storied history to surpass the 5,000-yard plateau for rushing yards in a career.
Maine Maritime Last Week: Senior Tony Tokarz piled up 249 yards of total offense ad five touchdowns to lead Worcester State past Maine Maritime 39-22 in New England Football Conference Bogan Division action. The Lancers (5-0, 2-0) snapped a two-game skid against the Mariners (3-1, 1-1) to maintain their series lead, 12-10.
Westfield State Last Week: Westfield State forced four Bridgewater State turnovers and the Owls held on for a 10-7 victory in New England Football Conference Bogan Division action on Friday evening. Westfield State, which did not commit any turnovers, improved its overall record to 2-3 (1-1 Bogan) while Bridgewater State slipped to 2-2 and 0-2 in the divisional standings. The contest marked the first ever night game at Swenson Field.
Rende Recognized: Quarterback Matthew Rende was recognized by the NEFC for his performance in last week's defeat at Worcester State. Rende rushed for 151 yards on 23 carries (6.6 yards per rush) and found the end zone twice. It was the ninth 100-yard rushing game of Rende's career and the first time this season that he was named to the Weekly Honor Roll.
On the Line: Maine Maritime rides into Westfield holding a six-game winning streak in the series. With both teams at 1-1 in the Bogan Division, a victory is necessary to keep the early pace.
Road Warriors: Maine Maritime is playing its second consecutive game on the road. It is MMA's third road game of the season.
Still Running Second: Averaging 369 rushing yards per game, the Maine Maritime offense is still ranked second in the nation behind Springfield College, which has rushed for 405 yards per game this season.
