DI-S Advances to State Golf Team Championships

LINCOLN — The Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners were the lone Hancock County team to advance to qualify for state championship play at Thursday’s Penobscot Valley Conference qualifier at the Jato Highlands Golf Course.

The Mariners, who finished the regular season with an 8-1 record, placed first among Class C teams as Sam Grindle, Connor Morey, Nick Eaton, Drew Siebert and Alec Eaton combined for a score of 363.

Grindle also was the top individual golfer of the day with a round of 72, with Greg Martin of the Ellsworth Eagles coming in with a 77.

Also advancing to the state individual championship Jasper Adam of the George Stevens Academy Eagles with an 81, Ben Walls of the Mount Desert Island Trojans with an 81 and Morey of the Mariners with an 83.

Morgan Kelley of MDI also qualified for the girls’ individual championship with a score of 101.

In Class B, Presque Isle (325), Hermon (330), Foxcroft Academy (341) and Caribou (365) qualified for the state team championship meet.

The Ellsworth Eagles, who completed their second perfect regular season at 9-0, placed fifth in Class B with a score of 369, MDI came in at 400 and the Bucksport Golden Bucks scored 406.

The state team championships will be played next Saturday and the individual championships will be held Saturday, Oct. 17, at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.
