Witches Hold Off Trojans

Written by  Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 1:38 pm

BREWER — After a 41-yard run by Trevor Alley on a successful nine-play march to the goal line, the 1-3 Mount Desert Island Trojans were looking at a potential win over the Brewer Witches on Friday at Doyle Field.

With just 4:29 left on the clock, and on a fourth-and-five, MDI quarterback Donny Hanson completed a near perfect pitch to running back Cameron Crawford. “And it looked like we were going to make it,” said coach Mark Shields.

But Crawford came up short of the first down by a few inches to end the game with Brewer on top 14-12.

“I looked at the tape. It looks like they put ball in the right spot,” said Shields. “(The referees) did their job. It was a really close call.”

Earlier in the fourth quarter, Alley was stopped just shy of the end zone on a two-point conversion that would have tied the game. The two-point conversion attempt came on the heels of a 12-play, 72-yard drive that ended in a one-yard touchdown by Crawford.

In the first quarter, Hanson intercepted the ball for a 62-yard return. Minutes later, he launched a nine-yard touchdown pass to Sean Harding for the first MDI points on the board.

The Witches had taken the early lead after returning the opening kickoff 80 yards on for a touchdown, and they scored again several minutes before halftime to lead 14-6.

Alley finished the game with 72 yards on 10 carries and Elias Burne had 22 carries for 54 yards for MDI.

The Trojans will next face 1-3 Belfast at MDI’s homecoming game at 1:30 p.m. next Saturday.

Running back Jayson Burke is not yet cleared to participate in the game, but according to Shields, he says he is feeling well and is not experiencing symptoms of head trauma.
