ELLSWORTH — The Bucksport Golden Bucks sat atop Maine’s Class B volleyball standings with a record of 5-1 at press time, while the Mount Desert Island Trojans were ranked second in Class A with a 5-0 record.
In action over the past week, the Ellsworth Eagles evened their record at 3-3 with wins of 3-1 over the Narraguagus Knights,Wednesday, and 3-2 over the Machias Bulldogs, on Friday.
MDI’s Trojans downed Bucksport 3-1, the first loss of the season for the Golden Bucks, on Wednesday, in Bucksport.
The Trojans lost a close 25-23 first game to the Golden Bucks , but rebounded to win the next three by scores of 25-20, 25-11 and 25-20.
“Bucksport was challenging,” said MDI coach Todd Brophy. “They are a very, very good defensive team.”
Brophy said MDI’s schedule now is “kind of on the uphill. We’re going to be working hard knowing that on October 10 we’re going to Gorham to play Greely (also 5-0). And we’ve got a lot of talented teams to play against beforehand to hopefully gain experience from.”
The struggling Sumner Tigers continued to look unsuccessfully for the first win, falling to the Jonesport-Beals Royalettes, on Wednesday, and the Narraguagus Knights, Friday, by 3-0 scores.
