BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island Trojans got off to a good start Friday night, building a 20-14 lead in the first half against the Cougars of Farmington’s Mount Blue.

However, the Cougars erupted in the second half to win 50-26.

Elias Burne opened the scoring for MDI with six minutes left in the first period and added a second touchdown early in the second quarter.

MDI pushed the lead to 20-6 when the Trojans recovered a Mount Blue fumble and Jayson Burke raced 53 yards for a first down at the goal line, then took the ball into the end zone for a touchdown on the next play.

But Burke suffered a head injury on the play and did not return.

Burke had 120 yards on 10 carries in the first half for MDI.

But it was almost all Cougars in the second half as the visitors pushed across 36 points to put the game well out of reach of the Trojans.

Burne got his third touchdown of the night for MDI late in the fourth quarter and finished with 158 yards on 33 carries.

The Trojans will travel to Brewer Friday night for a 7 p.m. game against the Witches, who dropped down from Class A to B this year due to lower enrollment.

Emerson Whitney of the Mount Desert Islander contributed to this story.
