Eagles Get Third victory

Written by  Hugh Bowden Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at 2:15 pm

HERMON — Robert Banner scored three touchdowns, one of them a 60-yard run, to lead the Ellsworth/Sumner football team over the Hermon Hawk junior varsity 36-0 on Monday.

It was the third straight win and second shutout for Ellsworth/ Sumner in its first year of high school play.

Josh Fowler put the team in front on a two-yard touchdown run that was set up by a Matt Clark punt that the Hawks couldn’t handle, giving Ellsworth/Sumner the ball at the Hermon five-yard line.

Clark also had a touchdown for Ellsworth/Sumner and two-point conversions were added by quarterback Matt Savageau, Clark and Banner.

Michael Brooks had a pair of interceptions, one that was returned for a touchdown that was nullified by a clipping penalty.

Coach Duane Crawford said the team defense allowed Hermon just one sustained drive in the game.

“Once the defense settled into a rhythm, they did a great job of keeping everything in front of them and not giving up much in the way of yardage,” he said.

Ellsworth/Sumner’s special teams unit “has really become a weapon for us,” said Crawford. “With our kickoff and punt teams, we feel they are almost an extension of our offense because of the depth we get on both. Anything can happen, especially on punt, and it puts us in a position to recover the ball.”

Ellsworth/Sumner will host the John Bapst Crusader JV squad on Monday at 5 p.m.
