BIDDEFORD — The Maine Maritime Academy women's cross country team placed 10th in the field of a dozen at the University of New England Invitational on Saturday. The hosts won the race at Rotary Park in Biddeford, besting Southern Maine, Husson and Maine Farmington at the front of the field.

USM's Molly Carl was the first runner in the field of 94 to complete the 5,000-meter course, posting a time of 20:28. She was followed by teammate Morgan Beede, but the Nor'Easters finished with five runners in the top team to collect the team hardware.

MMA's top finisher was Emily Fanning (New Boston, N.H.) in 25:29. Bridget Duffy (Hallowell) raced the course in an even 28 minutes for 75th place, while Samantha DePlanche (Dover, N.H.) turned in a 28:34 in her first race of the season for 77th place.  Jane Allred (Morrill) crossed in 29:06 to finish 80th. Kara Wood (Otisfield) rounded out the Mariners' entries with a 32:55. She took 92nd place.

The Mariners are idle next weekend. They return to the course on September 24th at the Unity Invitational.
