WATERVILLE — The Mount Desert Island Trojans were walloped 28-3 by the Purple Panthers in Saturday’s season opener in Waterville.

“We made some mistakes up front and we didn’t play smart. We played hard, but not smart,” said head coach Mark Shields. “It doesn’t show on the board, but a lot of good did come out of this game.”

Shields spoke about watching tape after the game with his players.

“They saw what they did and they are seeing how to become better football players,” said Shields.

Trevor Alley put MDI’s only points on the board during the last play of the first half with a 23-yard field goal. Cameron Crawford set up the field goal after recovering a fumble for a gain of 45 yards.

Overall, the Trojan offense gained 158 yards to Waterville’s 336 and posted 12 first downs to Waterville’s 17.

Running back Jayson Burke had 57 yards on 10 carries despite leaving the game during the second quarter because of a knee injury. Burke will return to the field for MDI’s home opener against the Camden Hills Windjammers, Friday.

Running back Trevor Alley had 52 yards on 10 carries and Elias Burn had 37 yards on 13 carries.
