ELLSWORTH — Sophomores Dan Curts and Aleta Looker own the cross-country course records at Ellsworth High School — at least for a while.
The two Eagle runners took top individual honors in Saturday’s Ellsworth Invitational as the new 3.0-mile cross-country course on the grounds of EHS made its debut.
After circling the new EHS soccer/football field at the start, runners wind their way up the hills and around the high school softball field before disappearing into the woods, then emerge at the far end of the soccer/football field.
Then they do it again.
Curts completed the boys’ varsity race in 16 minutes, 51 seconds, besting runner-up Matt Eager of Presque Isle by 19 seconds.
Caribou took top honors among the 13 boys’ teams with a score of 44. John Bapst was second with 77 points and Ellsworth was third with 96.
Scoring for the Eagles, behind Curts, were junior Kody Holmes, 18th in 18:54; sophomore Brayden Beardsley, 23rd in 19:16; sophomore Robert Looker, 28th in 19:24; and sophomore Frank King, 30th in 19:44.
For the Mount Desert Island Trojans, who placed fifth, scorers were freshman William Fletcher, 22nd in 19:15; senior Jon Sproule, 31st in 19:45; senior Sam Sproule, 33rd in 19:53; sophomore Ransom Burgess, 36th in 20:10; and freshman Ralph Magnani, 50th in 20:45.
Scoring for the Sumner Tigers, who placed ninth, were Brandon Wade, 20th in 19:12; Taylor Lee, 34th in 10:55; Kyle Jordan, 62nd in 21:46; John SanDiego, 75th in 23:49; and Jason Smith, 78th in 24:50.
For the Bucksport Golden Bucks, who were 13th, scorers were Robin Doyle, 51st in 20:46; Austin Sargent, 56th in 21:19; Zach Clark, 79th in 25:21; Alex Bourgon, 81st in 26:08; and Nic Chouinard, 84th in 26:35.
For the George Stevens Academy Eagles, River Vogel was 17th in 18:47.
In the girls’ varsity race, Looker ran on the shoulder of Caribou’s Mackenzie Belyea for the first half of the race, but pulled in front on her second trip up the steep hill at the softball field.
Looker won with a time of 20:20 with Adrienne Carmack of John Bapst second in 20:43 and Belyea placing third in 20:55.
The John Bapst girls took top team honors with 29 points, putting four runners among the top 10.
The Mount Desert Island Trojans, with 49 points, were second with five runners scoring in the span of 13 seconds.
Three of them were among the top 10: sophomore Nora Hubbell was seventh in 22:16, sophomore Maggie Painter was eighth in 22:17 and junior Malia Demers was 10th in 22:25.
Also scoring for MDI were sophomore Olivia Erickson, 11th in 22:26 and sophomore Isabel Erickson, 13th in 22:29.
Caribou was third with 60; and Ellsworth placed fourth with 136.
Scoring behind Looker for Ellsworth were senior Mallory Nightingale, 25th in 23:50; junior Brooke Dunn, 35th in 25:37; junior Kelsey Leighton, 41st in 26:20; and sophomore Kimika Endo, 44th in 27:17.
Scoring for the Bucksport girls, who placed seventh among eight teams, were Nelly Winship, 18th in 22:59; Olivia Ekelund, 30th in 24:51; Amber Hall, 38th in 25:59; Avalon Langevin, 49th in 28:03; and Bri Newbegin, 50th in 28:03.
