Mariners Wrap Up Perfect Weekend

CASTINE — Maine Maritime Academy remained unblemished on the young season with a pair of 3-0 sweeps on Saturday. The Mariners toppled Lesley University 25-15, 25-18, 25-17, before knocking off Maine-Presque Isle for the third time in as many matches, 25-11, 25-13, 25-9. MMA got through the weekend without dropping a single game.

Kayley Rodriguez (Quincy, Ill.) fueled a balanced offense with 14 assists in the win over Lesley. Chelsea Ward (Homer, Alaska) was the prime beneficiary with a dozen kills to go along with 17 digs, three aces and an assisted block. Heather Moore (Macedon, N.Y.) offered 10 digs, nine assists and five kills to the Mariners (4-0) effort against the Lynx (1-1), while Melissa Lail (Elizabeth, Colo.) and Sydney Robertson (Barnstead, N.H.) each turned in six kills. Lail also hit double figures in the digs column with 10. The Lynx got 10 kills and 11 digs out of Danielle Johnson. Kaitlyn Miller fed the offense 22 assists.

Moore stole the show in the nightcap accounting for eight kills on nine attacks, 17 assists, six aces and four digs. Robertson had seven kills for the Mariners, while Lail and Lauren Sakahara (Bellvue, Wash.) each served up five aces. Karen Creighton and Samantha Roy each recorded four kills for the Owls (0-4).

The Mariners return to action on Friday against Maine-Farmington. It is the first of three matches on the Mariners' docket at the Colby Invitational.
