BAR HARBOR — Construction of a 3/4-mile walking trail connecting Eden Street with Duck Brook Road in Acadia National Park is slated to begin next week.
The Route 3 Duck Brook Bridge Connector Trail is a project of Friends of Acadia (FOA). It will begin at Eden Street across from College of the Atlantic and connect with Duck Brook Road near the Park Loop Road overpass. It will run along the edge of the Acadia Inn property and by Bar Harbor Motel before connecting with the site of an old trail on park land.
Representatives of FOA, the Acadia Inn and the Bar Harbor Motel all said Tuesday that the trail project will be a “win-win” for everyone involved.
“This will really open up access to all of the hotels that are located on Eden street, as well as students at COA and people that live on the Highbrook Road,” said Acadia Inn general manager Bethany Reece. The Acadia Inn is owned by hotelier David Witham.
“We’re just happy to share some of our property to make it work,” Bar Harbor Motel owner Dick Collier said. “It will ease a lot of traffic congestion up by Duck Brook and even Eagle Lake.”
A park trail crew is set to begin construction on the $85,000 path next week, FOA projects and events coordinator Terry Begley said. A grant of $20,000 from the Nature Valley corporation will contribute to the work, while the rest of the money will be raised through donations.
