ELLSWORTH — The man accused of breaking into Pretty Marsh summer home earlier this month is now facing charges for use of a stolen credit card.
According to Deputy Chris Thornton of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, James Grindel, 43, allegedly broke into a parked vehicle on Feb. 1 and stole a credit card. The deputy said he is unsure whether the theft occurred while the vehicle was in Hancock or in Mount Desert.
By tracking activity on the stolen credit card and using information from a GPS device in Mr. Grindel’s car, Deputy Thornton said he was able to determine Mr. Grindel made about $1,000 worth of purchases with the card in Hancock and Penobscot counties. Surveillance videos from stores offer additional evidence, the deputy said.
Security videos from local banks also show that Mr. Grindel unsuccessfully attempted to withdraw cash from ATMs using the stolen card, Deputy Thornton said.
According to police, Mr. Grindel has prior burglary convictions.
