ELLSWORTH — Ellsworth snapped a 3-3 tie with six runs in the fifth inning and went on to down Acadian of Mount Desert Island 9-3 to win the Junior League District 1 championship on Thursday.

Two-run singles by Mitch Domagala and Griffin Nightingale sparked the fifth-inning rally that advanced Ellsworth to the State Junior League Tournament, which gets under way tonight at Bangor’s Mansfield Stadium.

It was Acadian that grabbed the lead in the first inning as Ellsworth righthander Jason Crossman opened the game with walks to Ryan Bender and Seth Young.

Both runners advanced on a passed ball and Bender subsequently scored on a wild pitch before the side was retired.

Ellsworth evened the score at 1-1 and threatened for more in the bottom of the inning.

Leadoff batter Conor Maguire reached base on an error and stole second before Acadian righthander Dylan Collin walked Domagala and Nightingale to load the bases.

Charlie Libby then lofted a pop fly single to score Maguire with Nightingale forced at second.

Simon French then walked to reload the bases, but Collin escaped further damage by striking out Alex Braley.

Acadian took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third on a walk to Bender, a run-scoring single by Taner Bickford and an RBI groundout by Thomas Paola.

Ellsworth came up with a run in the bottom of the inning as Domagala reached on an error, went to third on a single by Nightingale and scored on a bouncer to the pitcher by Braley.

Singles by Maguire and Nick Kennedy and a sacrifice fly by Domagala produced another Ellsworth run in the bottom of the fourth, knotting the score at 3-3.

But the roof fell in on Acadian in the bottom of the fifth.

A walk to Libby and a single by Simon French brought lefthander Alden Schulman on in relief of Collin for Acadian.

Ellsworth’s John Fendl advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, and Schulman got Crossman on a grounder to shortstop for the second out, with Libby scoring the go-ahead run.

But then came a walk to Dakota Chipman, an RBI single by Maguire, a single by Kennedy, a two-run single by Domagala and a two-run single by Nightingale for a 9-3 Ellsworth lead.

Maguire, who came on to pitch for Ellsworth at the start of the fifth inning, used an effective curve ball to strike out five of the 10 batters he faced.  He walked just one batter and didn’t allow a hit the rest of the way.

Maguire had three singles, Domagala drove in three runs with a single and a sacrifice fly, Nightingale had a pair of singles and two RBI and Kennedy singled twice for Ellsworth.

Sandy Henggeler and Bickford had the only hits for Acadian.
