WATERVILLE — On Wednesday, the Ellsworth Eagles picked up a 3-2 win over the Presque Isle Wildcats, a team they had beaten 4-1 earlier in the season.

The match came down to the second doubles match-up between Ellsworth’s Luc Victor and Dustin Murphy and Presque Isle’s Brock Cassidy and Mike Picard.

Ellsworth had grabbed the early lead as Tyler Small rolled over Caleb Mathers 6-1, 6-0 at first singles, and the first doubles duo of Brandan Albee and Adam Toothaker took command early in a 6-2, 6-2 win over Osman Castro and Andrew Legasse.

But while the second doubles match was unfolding, the Wildcats got wins from Connor Shaw over Dillon Toothaker 6-3, 6-2 at second singles and Emerson Castro over Tyler Beardsley 7-5, 6-3 at third singles.

That left Ellsworth’s fortunes in the hands of Victor and Murphy, and their battle with Cassidy and Picard was a seesaw affair.

After dropping the first set 6-3, the Ellsworth duo jumped in front in the second set, only to see the boys from Presque Isle battle back to force a tiebreaker.

Murphy and Victor prevailed 7-3 in the tiebreaker but failed to carry that momentum into the decisive third set.

They fell behind 3-0 before winning the next four games to take a 4-3 lead.

Cassidy and Picard took the next game to knot the score at 4-4, with the serve going over to Ellsworth’s Murphy.

After watching a 40-15 lead disappear, Murphy cranked two big serves to put another game in the Eagles’ win column, and the Eagle duo then broke serve to take the 6-4 win — and the championship — over the Wildcats.

“We’ve got to give Presque Isle a lot of credit,” said Ellsworth coach Brian Higgins. “We knew coming in that they are a very good team.”
