WATERVILLE — In an epic 11-inning battle, the Mount Desert Island Trojans suffered a dramatic 3-2 loss to the defending champion Waterville Purple Panthers in an Eastern Maine Class B baseball semifinal on Saturday.
The loss turned on the judgment of the umpire in a call at home plate in the top of the 11th.
“Some of these kids have played a lot of sports for a lot of years, but this game and that play will stick out in their minds for a long time,” said MDI coach Mike Swanson. “Everybody is going to remember this game. Win or lose, they can be proud they played a very good, very close game against a team they’ve been hearing about for years.”
After being locked in a 2-2 tie for five innings, it seemed like the Trojans would catch a break in the late going.
Duncan Smith raced home on a passed ball but his run was disallowed after the umpire, in response to a Waterville challenge, ruled that Smith did not touch the plate and called him out.
Caleb MacDonald followed the controversial play by bunting for a single but was left on base.
The Purple Panthers were able to capitalize on two MDI errors in the bottom of the 11th to score the one run they needed to win.
“It was a fantastic game. We battled toe to toe with them,” said Swanson. “Their kids battled. We battled. They made a few mistakes and we capitalized. We made a few mistakes and they capitalized. It was a tough break on that call in the 11th, but that happens. We did a lot of good things.”
Swanson believes that the game was not determined by that one retracted run.
“We had the whole game to win,” he said. “That’s baseball.”
Waterville took the lead in the second inning, but the Trojans scored two in the fifth.
Ben Walls singled and scored on a double by Trojan pitcher Dennis O’Neil, and O’Neil scored on an error to give MDI the lead.
But Waterville tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning on a double and an MDI error.
Both pitchers threw for 10 innings — the maximum allowed. O’Neil posted four strikeouts and gave up nine hits. Kyle McKim pitched the last inning in relief.
