WATERVILLE — On Wednesday, the top-seeded GSA Eagles claimed their eighth Eastern Maine title in the past 10 years as they edged the number two Orono Red Riots 3-2 with a pair of tiebreaker victories just moments apart.

Jasper Adam had given the Eagles an early lead with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alex Caballero at second singles.

But the Red Riots pulled ahead 2-1 as Brewster Cherkis got past Alexander Heilner 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 at third singles, and the second doubles duo of Conor McKaig and Anton Kloss bested GSA’s Jason Gao and James Chen 6-4, 7-5.

At first singles, GSA’s Johnny Xue, a sophomore, was locked in a tight match with Orono’s Gustav Mansson.

Both sets went to tiebreakers, with Xue finally prevailing 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-2).

At the same time, drama was unfolding on the first doubles court where GSA’s Will Brokaw and Roy Xu had dropped the first set 3-6 to Orono’s Carson Foley and Tannar Francis, before staying alive with a 7-6 (7-2) tiebreaker win in the second set.

That tiebreaker win shifted the momentum in GSA’s favor, and Brokaw and Xu left the court with a decisive 6-3 third-set win just seconds before Xue completed his win over Mansson to give the Eagles their 3-2 edge.

“I knew this was going to be a challenge,” said GSA coach Mark Messer, “but I had no idea that we’d got to three tiebreakers in two of these matches.”
