BAR HARBOR — What a difference one big game can make.

When they took the field Wednesday in Bar Harbor, the Ellsworth Eagles were facing the possibility of a preliminary playoff to stay alive in the Eastern Maine Class B baseball tournament.

But a 4-0 shutout over the Mount Desert Island Trojans vaulted the Eagles from eighth place in the standings to a second-place tie with the Bucksport Golden Bucks.

The Eagles will finish no worse than third when the final standings are set, and that means home field advantage in a Class B quarterfinal.

Ellsworth got things started early against the fourth-ranked Trojans, scoring two runs in the first inning against MDI righthander Dennis O’Neil.

Andrew Austin reached base on an error, stole second and scored on a triple by Jordan Carter.

Thomas Sawyer than singled, driving in Carter for a 2-0 Eagle lead.

The Eagles added another run in the second inning when Riley DeWitt doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice by Jacob Maguire and scored on a single by Austin.

In the fourth inning, Austin singled with one out, stole second and scored on a single by Carter for a 4-0 lead.

Sawyer, who leads Ellsworth pitchers with a record of 6-2, hadn’t allowed a hit going into the fifth inning.

But MDI’s O’Neil broke up the no-hitter with a double as the Trojans left three runners stranded in the inning.

MDI loaded the bases again in the seventh but couldn’t score against the Eagle righthander, who also gave up a single to Gordon Falt and a double to Cole McEnroe in the late going.

Sawyer finished with six strikeouts.

O’Neil also went the distance for MDI, giving up 10 hits as the Trojans closed out the regular season with a record of 10-6.
