ELLSWORTH — A critical 4-1 win over the John Bapst Crusaders on Thursday likely ensured a post-season softball playoff spot for the Ellsworth Eagle girls.
With only a game with the 13th-ranked Mount Desert Island Trojans still undecided at press time, the 7-8 Eagles were holding down the 10th — and last — playoff spot in the Eastern Maine Class B standings.
Two other Hancock County teams are headed for post-season play, with a third still knocking on the door.
The 14-2 Bucksport Golden Bucks were ranked fourth in Class B prior to Tuesday’s point-worthy win over the Old Town Coyotes, and the 13-2 Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners are ranked number two in Class D.
The 7-8 Sumner Tigers were ranked 11th, trailing the Woodland Dragons by less than two points for the 10th and last qualifying position in Class C.
A win today over the number six Washington Academy Raiders likely would boost the Tigers into the playoffs.
Finishing out of playoff contention will be the 6-9 MDI Trojans in Class B and the 6-9 George Stevens Academy Eagles in Class C.
