Ellsworth Hopes to Avoid Prelim

Written by  Hugh Bowden Wednesday, June 01, 2011 at 3:52 pm

ELLSWORTH — The outcome of today’s regular season finale against the Mount Desert Island Trojans will likely determined whether the Ellsworth Eagles face a preliminary playoff in Eastern Maine Class B baseball.

Even with a stellar record of 12-3 heading into the game, the Eagles were ranked only eighth in the standings.

A win over the third-ranked Trojans (10-5) could well provide enough Heal points to boost the Eagles into the top six teams, thus avoiding a playoff since the top six advance directly to the tournament quarterfinals.

A loss would leave the Eagles battling for one of the final four playoff spots.

The 10-6 Bucksport Golden Bucks, who lost to Old Town 8-3 on Tuesday in their final regular season game, currently are ranked second in Class B.

In Class C, the 9-5-1 George Stevens Academy Eagles gave themselves a boost on Monday as they nipped the MDI Trojans 3-2.

The Eagles now are ranked fifth in the Class C standings.

And in Class D, the 9-6 Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners are ranked fifth.

Out of the post-season tournament picture are the 4-11 Sumner Tigers in Class C.
