BANGOR — After more than a week of postponements, the Eastern Maine Region 2, three Hancock County boys and six girls have advanced to the Round of 48 in the State Tennis Singles Championships.

Matches through to the semifinals will take place Monday and Tuesday, with the semifinals and finals on Saturday, June 4, at Bates College in Lewiston.

After more than a week of rain prevented outdoor play, the Region 2 elimination rounds were moved indoors at Bangor Tennis with the boys playing on Monday and the girls on Tuesday.

After Monday’s action, BobTom Flynn of Hancock, who plays for the John Bapst Crusaders, emerged as the region’s top seed, with Tyler Small of the Ellsworth Eagles seeded second and Johnny Xue of the George Stevens Academy Eagles seeded fifth.

Flynn sailed through his competition, beating Timothy Gustin of Dexter 8-0 in Round 2 and Josh Carlson of Brewer 6-0, 6-0 in the finals.

Small bested Matthew Dunning of John Bapst 8-0 in Round 2 and Jason Linnell of Bangor 6-0, 6-0 in the final.

Xue defeated John McCullugh of Old Town 8-1 in Round 2 and Dillon Toothaker of Ellsworth 6-2, 6-2 in the final.

Ellsworth’s Tyler Beardsley also played his way to the final with an 8-5 win over Garrett Lee of the Mount Desert Island Trojans in the first round and a default win in Round 2.

Alex Burgess of Brewer got past Beardsley 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 in the final.

On Tuesday, freshman Mea Clark of the Mount Desert Island Trojans finished as the region’s top seed, with Ellsworth’s Holly Wadman fourth, MDI’s Julia Christie fifth and Grace Robbins sixth, Ellsworth’s Ashley Harding eighth and GSA’s Maddie Theoharidis ninth.

Clark passed through Round 2 by default and beat Lily McCloskey of Bangor 6-0, 6-0 in the final.

Wadman downed Margaret Pierce of Hermon 8-2 in Round 2 and bested Giulia Papini of Orono 6-3, 6-4 in the final.

Christie defeated GSA’s Tierney Hally 8-1 in Round 2 and downed Virginia Lopez-Anido of Orono 6-1, 6-0 in the final.

Robbins won by default in Round 2 and downed Ina Maloney of Ellsworth 6-2, 6-1 in the final.
